Ben Hellwarth is a Los Angeles-based journalist and the author of "SEALAB: America's Forgotten Quest to Live and Work on the Ocean Floor" (Simon & Schuster, 2012), a well-received nonfiction narrative about a game-changing U.S. Navy program of the 1960s that enabled divers to go deeper and stay down much longer than ever thought possible. The extensive research and reporting for the book turned Ben into something of a specialist in undersea activities, but once upon a time he wrote about everything from teen suicide to the birth of reality TV as a newspaper staff writer in his home state of California.
