Bradley Stephens

Historian

Bradley Stephens is a historian of French literature who teaches at the University of Bristol. A Cambridge-educated specialist of the life and works of Victor Hugo, he is the author of a new introduction to Hugo's novel The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (Signet Classics, 2010) and a major study of Hugo's philosophical thinking, entitled Victor Hugo, Jean-Paul Sartre, and the Liability of Liberty (Legenda, 2011).

Bradley has also published numerous journal articles and book chapters on this subject, in addition to speaking at various international conferences and public events. He is currently working on the 150-year cultural history of Les Misérables as part of a broader project on adaptations of French Romantic works.
