Carina Ray is assistant professor of African and Black Atlantic History at Fordham University. Ray's forthcoming manuscript is entitled Crossing the Color Line: Race, Sex and the Contested Politics of Colonial Rule in Ghana and she is co-editor of Darfur and the Crisis of Governance in Sudan: A Critical Reader and Navigating African Maritime History. She writes widely about African politics, culture, history, and identity in her monthly column for New African magazine.
