Carlos M. Duarte Quesada (Lisbon, 07.27.1960) is a Research Professor of National Research Council at the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDEA), a joint institute between CSIC and the University of the Balearic Islands and Oceans Director, Institute of the University of Western Australia. His research has focused on the functioning of aquatic ecosystems (lakes, ponds, swamps, rivers, coastal ecosystems varied mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass beds, estuaries, and the global ocean, its role in the functioning of the biosphere and its response to global change. He has published more than 400 scientific papers in international journals, a dozen book chapters, and two books, and has directed more than 30 research projects, including the first Spanish scientific expedition to the Arctic expedition and circumnavigation < em> Malaspina 2010 . He chaired the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography between 2008 and 2010. In 2001 he received the Medal G. Evelyn Hutchinson scientific excellence by the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography. Since 2005 he is recognized as a < em> Highly Cited Scientist by the Institute of Scientific Information in Philadelphia and in 2007 he received the National Research Award "Alejandro Malaspina." In 2008, he received the "Augusto González Linares Environment Award," from the University and Government of Cantabria. In 2009, he was invited to join the Scientific Council of the European Research Council, where he received the Jaime I Prize for Research in Nature Protection. and was decorated by the Guardia Civil. In 2010 he was named Doctor Honoris Causa by the Université Quebec at Montreal and in 2011 received an honorary doctorate from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands and the "Prix d'Excellence" from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea
