Carol Swartout Klein grew up in Ferguson. A journalist by training, she wrote a children's book, Painting for Peace in Ferguson and the accompanying Painting for Peace - A Coloring Book for All Ages about the remarkable story of hundreds of artists coming together to bring hope to a community in shock following the unrest last November. Designed to spark positive conversations about building community, the book was is an International Literacy Association 2016 Teacher's Choices Booklist selection and won an Independent Publisher “Outstanding Book of the Year” award. Profits from book sales have benefitted education and youth programs and small business recovery in Ferguson.
