Chris McElwee

Founder, Michael's Way

The catalyst for Chris McElwee to create the Michael’s Way organization was life-altering: the death of his 25-year-old brother Michael due to Leukemia. This was a tragic circumstance which hit close to home – and to the heart. Chris decided he wanted to help other homes, other hearts that were affected not only by the emotional challenges of having a young family member fighting cancer, but the financial challenges as well.

Seventeen years after the founding of Michael Way’s, approximately $15 million has been raised to help families bear the financial burden which accompanies any child’s battle with cancer. Approximately $400,000 is distributed annually with 90 percent of families receiving multi-year assistance.

Chris owns a construction company but commits approximately 64 hours each month to concentrate on fundraising – and honoring his brother’s memory. Approximately $1 million each year can be credited to Chris’ volunteer efforts alone.
