David Catania

At-Large member, Council of the District of Columbia

David A. Catania (Independent) is an At-Large member of the Council of the District of Columbia. Since winning a special election in 1997, Catania he has been re-elected four times – in 1998, 2002, 2006, and 2010. Councilmember Catania was the first openly gay member of the D.C. Council and was the driving force behind the District’s successful fight for marriage equality. Councilmember Catania has chaired the Council’s Committee on Health since 2005 and is a nationally recognized leader on health care matters. Due largely to Catania’s efforts, the District now boasts the lowest rate of uninsured children in the nation and the second lowest uninsured rate for all individuals. Councilmember Catania is a double graduate of Georgetown University (GU), where he earned a B.S. from the School of Foreign Service in 1990 and a J.D. from the GU Law Center in 1993.
