Author of five books: Lush Life: A Biography of Billy Strayhorn; Positively 4th Street: The Lives and Times of Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Mimi Baez Farina and Richard Farina; The Ten-Cent Plague: The Great Comic Book Scare and How It Changed America; Heroes and Villains: Essays on Music, Movies, Comics and Culture; and Love for Sale: Pop Music in America. Three-time winner of the ASCAP/Deems Taylor Award for Music Writing; three-time finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award; finalist for the National Magazine Award. First book, Lush Life, was named one of 100 Best Nonfiction Books of All Time by The New York Times. Songs performed by more than a dozen artists, recorded on five albums by various artists. Currently working on book of fiction for publication by W.W. Norton, as well as album of new songs written in collaboration with composer Renee Rosnes.
