David Sheppard

Director General, Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP)

David Sheppard is Adjunct Senior Fellow, University of the South Pacific and former Director General of SPREP www.sprep.org from 2009 to 2015. SPREP is the lead agency in the Pacific region for: climate change; biodiversity; waste management; and environmental governance. Prior to SPREP, David worked with IUCN www.iucn.org/ as Head of their Protected Areas Programme where his roles included leading IUCN’s work on protected areas and IUCN’s work as an Advisory Body with the UNESCO World Heritage Convention. He also served as the Secretary General of the Vth IUCN World Parks Congress (WPC), held in Durban, South Africa in 2003. David has also worked at the Senior Executive level in the New South Wales (Australia) National Parks and Wildlife Service and worked with the Tasmanian and New Zealand Governments in the forestry sector. David has also worked as a consultant with the World Bank and Asian Development Bank and has represented SPREP, IUCN and other organisations, at the highest level, on many International Boards and Committees.
