I'm the Managing Editor of International Editions at Yoga Journal and the author of "Ravenous: A Food Lover's Journey from Obsession to Freedom."

Most weight loss advice is divided into a few, well-worn camps: Eat exactly the right proportion of nutrients, which makes eating seem like a lab experiment, or exert tremendous will, which makes it seem like hard labor.

In my book, “Ravenous," I write how I lost 30 pounds and three sizes, and re-defined my relationship with my body through re-framing how I viewed weight-loss. On my yoga mat one day, I realized that losing weight, like doing yoga, is a practice; the whole tenor of the process changed.

Losing weight became a journey, not a battle, a practice, not a performance, a matter of awareness, not vigilence. I didn't just sit in lotus one day, I practiced it. I didn't just lose 30 pounds one day, I practiced at it. Over time, I sat in lotus and lost 30 pounds.
