Debra Haaland, currently serves as the Chairwoman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico. Haaland, a member of the Pueblo of Laguna in New Mexico, is the first Native American woman to lead a major state party in the country. Prior to leading the Democratic Party of New Mexico, Haaland became the first Native American woman to run for lieutenant governor in New Mexico. While in law school at the University of New Mexico, Debra Haaland worked to SB 482, in the 47th NM Legislature, which gave in-state tuition to enrolled members of New Mexico Tribes regardless of residency.
