Dr. Russell E. Ware
Director, Texas Children's Center for Global Health
Dr. Russell E. Ware is the Director of the Texas Children's Center for Global Health, Director of the Texas Children's Hematology Center and a Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, where he also serves as Vice Chairman for Global Health.
Ware received an undergraduate degree in chemistry from Furman University in Greenville, S.C., (1979) and both his medical degree (1983) and Ph.D. degree (1991) from the Duke University School of Medicine. He completed his pediatric residency training at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital (1983-86) then returned to Duke for sub-specialty training in hematology/oncology (1986-89).
An accomplished physician-scientist, Ware receives more than $10 million annually in National Institutes of Health funding. He has authored more than 200 scientific papers and 35 textbook chapters. His research interests include genetic modifiers of sickle cell disease, fetal hemoglobin induction, and bone marrow failure syndrome, especially paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria. Clinically, Ware focuses on sickle cell disease, disease, thrombocytopenia and autoimmune blood disorders.
