Eric Hamburg

Eric Hamburg is a writer, attorney and film producer in Los Angeles. He is the director of the 2009 documentary film PREVENTING GENOCIDE, featuring interviews with Kofi Annan, Desmond Tutu, William Perry and many others. He is also a former aide to Senator John Kerry, and was an adviser to the Kerry presidential campaign in 2004. He is co-author of the 2013 book, “Give Peace A Chance: Preventing Mass Violence”.

Mr. Hamburg was the originator and Co-Producer of ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, the 1999 hit movie starring Al Pacino. He also originated and co-produced NIXON, the 1995 film starring Anthony Hopkins which was nominated for four Academy Awards. He also co-produced a TV documentary on Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, which was shown in 1998 on TBS and on CNN Perspectives.

From 1985 to 1989, Mr. Hamburg served on the staff of US Senator John Kerry in Washington, DC as a speechwriter and legislative assistant. He handled issues including South Africa sanctions, US-Soviet relations, judicial nominations and Vietnam veterans. He has also worked on the staff of the Senate Committee on Aging for then Chairman John Heinz, and clerked for Judge David Bazelon on the US Court of Appeals in Washington, DC.

From 1989 to 1993, Mr. Hamburg worked in the US Congress for Rep. Lee Hamilton on the staff of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. In 1989-90, he was awarded a Fellowship in Arms Control and National Security by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was also a Visiting Fellow at Stanford University during academic year 1989 at the Center for International Security and Arms Control, and published a monograph on legal issues in arms control. He also wrote and produced a documentary on Soviet new thinking for the program America’s Defense Monitor.

Mr. Hamburg is the author of the book “JFK, Nixon, Oliver Stone and Me”, published by Public Affairs Books in 2002. Mr. Hamburg was a Visiting Scholar at UCLA in the Burkle Center for International Relations from 2000-2002, where he wrote and published a Working Paper on the Potential Role of the Media in Preventing Deadly Conflicts.

Mr. Hamburg is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Cruz and of the University Of San Francisco School Of Law. He holds a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and is a member of the California State Bar Association, the Writers Guild of America, and the Pacific Council on International Policy.
