Geronimo Desumala

Faith-based activist for human rights, with a penchant for art, design, style, and travel.

Geronimo Desumala serves as the Special Assistant to the Regional Executive Minister of the American Baptist Churches of Metropolitan New York. Prior to joining ABC Metro New York in February 2016, he was the Advocacy Officer for the World Council of Churches Ecumenical United Nations Office in New York. Since 2010, he advocated on behalf of the Council’s 345 member churches for gender justice, climate justice, and the human rights of indigenous peoples at various fora and mechanisms in the UN system. Prior to the WCC, Geronimo's work supported a global coalition of religious leaders and activists working towards the decriminalization of LGBT persons around the world, and to improve the resettlement of LGBT refugees in the US. Geronimo joined the UN civil society community in 2008 as an intern for PDHRE People’s Movement for Human Rights Learning, assisting the Executive Director in program development, social media marketing, and in the publication of "Human Rights Cities: Civic Engagement for Societal Development." Geronimo is also an advisory board member of the Center for Earth Ethics, a regular liturgist of his church, and a member of the parish council. He previously served on the Board of Directors for Trinity Place Shelter. A New Yorker, Geronimo is a native Californian and a graduate of Colby College.
