Godfrey Plata

Leadership for Educational Equity (LEE), ONE Houston education organizer

Godfrey Plata is a Filipino immigrant who is passionate about fighting for social and political justice. He currently works full-time as a Leadership for Educational Equity (LEE) community organizing fellow, supporting The Metropolitan Organization Houston (TMO Houston) to organize families and community leaders around issues meaningful to the city's Third Ward and Alief areas. In particular, he brings 9 years of experience in education, first stemmed by being a Teach For America corps member in Houston and leading 7th grade reading classes for over 330 students. After his time in the classroom, Godfrey went on to support teacher preparation efforts for Teach For America, part-time in Chicago and full-time in Houston and Tulsa. Most recently, as the Senior Managing Director of its Tulsa Institute, he partnered with Tulsa Public Schools and the YMCA of Greater Tulsa to provide summer learning experiences for 5000 kids from early childhood to high school, while simultaneously offering professional development to 500 teachers. He holds a BA in Theater and American Studies (concentration: Ethnic Studies) from the University of Richmond in Virginia and a MA in Performance Studies from UC Berkeley, where his thesis focused on notions of performance in education policy. He is a proud product of the Los Angeles and Long Beach Unified School Districts. When he's not working, Godfrey loves traveling, eating, and attending arts events.
