Iván Espinoza-Madrigal is the Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice. In a decade as a public interest lawyer, Iván has worked on a wide range of civil rights issues, including racial justice, immigrant rights, and LGBT/HIV equality. He speaks nationally on civil rights issues. His writing focuses on the legal needs of people who identify across intersecting lines of race, sexual orientation, gender identity, HIV status, and immigration status. Iván was formerly at Lambda Legal, where he focused on LGBT/HIV issues. Previously, he handled MALDEF’s immigrants’ rights docket, including a challenge to Arizona’s immigration law, and a landmark U.S. Supreme Court voting rights case. He also worked at Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP, where he defended New Haven’s immigrant-friendly municipal ID against an attempt to dismantle the program. Similar programs have now been rolled out in San Francisco and New York—victories for immigrant rights that would not have been possible without the precedent set in New Haven. Iván clerked for Judge Eric Clay in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and Judge Ronald Ellis in the U.S. District Court, S.D.N.Y. A summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he received a J.D. from NYU School of Law, where he was a Root-Tilden-Kern Sinsheimer Scholar. The National LGBT Bar Association has recognized him as one of the Best LGBT Lawyers Under 40.
