Stewart is a second year graduate student in the MFA Dramatic Writing Program at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Originally from Scotland, Stewart holds a BA/Hons degree in English Studies from Stirling University (2008). He also completed the UCLA Professional Program in Screenwriting in 2015. In August 2016, Stewart became an awardee of The Dewar Arts Award from Scotland.
