President of the National Council of Social Service for Industry (SESI) in Brazil
Jair Meneguelli is the President of the National Council of Social Service for Industry (SESI) in Brazil since 2003. SESI is an organization that aims to promote the standard of living for industrial workers and their families, through its focus on access to education, health and other important needs.
Prior to this, Meneguelli founded the Central Workers Union (CUT), the largest trade union in Latin America – where he led for 11 years. He also participated in the creation of the Workers Party (PT). As a union leader, Meneguelli was an integral part of large-scale protests during Brazil’s military rule. He was also elected a Congressman in 1994 for two terms.
