James Block has taught Political Theory and American Culture at DePaul for three decades. He has written for journals of opinion and the <em>New York Times</em>, and his book <em>A Nation of Agents: The American Path to a Modern Self and Society</em> was published in 2002 by Harvard University Press. A new book coming this February 2012, <em>The Crucible of Consent: American Child Rearing and the Forging of Liberal Society</em>, traces the role of child shaping and socialization as the central institution in American national formation, and will also be published by Harvard.
