Ambassador Jane Hartley

U.S. Ambassador to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco

Ambassador Jane Hartley was nominated by President Barack Obama on June 6, 2014, to serve concurrently as the U.S. ambassador to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco and was confirmed to both posts by the U.S. Senate on Sept. 16, 2014. She took her oath of office on Oct. 15, 2014, from Vice President Joseph Biden.

Ambassador Hartley is the former chief executive officer of the Observatory Group, a macroeconomic and political advisory firm in New York City. From 1994 to 2007, she served as the chief executive officer of the G7 Group, a research firm providing macroeconomic and political analysis to global investors about the G7 countries and China.

Ambassador Hartley has had an extensive career in public service, including serving as Director of Congressional Relations at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and later as President Carter’s associate assistant in the Office of Public Liaison. Ambassador Hartley held a variety of senior management positions in the media industry, including as Vice President of Group W Cable, Westinghouse Broadcasting (CBS), MCA (Universal), and as Vice President and Station Manager of WWOR-TV in New Jersey.

Ambassador Hartley served on the board of directors of public company Heidrick & Struggles, and on a number of nonprofit boards, including for the Corporation for National and Community Service and the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She served on the executive committee of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and was a member of the Wall Street Council of Boston College and the Women’s Council of Boston College. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Ambassador Hartley is a former vice chairman and member of the executive committee of the Economic Club of New York. She served on the President’s Leadership Council of Dartmouth College, as a director of Parsons School of Design and The New School, and as a trustee of the Nightingale-Bamford School and Sesame Workshop.

Ambassador Hartley received her B.A. degree in political science from Boston College (Newton College).

Ambassador Hartley is married to Mr. Ralph Schlosstein.
