Jim Downs is the author of Stand by Me: The Forgotten History of Gay Liberation (Basic Books, 2016) and Sick from Freedom: African-American Illness and Suffering during the Civil War and Reconstruction. He has published essays in The New York Times, The New Republic, TIME Magazine, The Chronicle of Higher Education, among others. He is an associate professor of history and acting director of the American Studies program at Connecticut College.
