Jill Shomer

Magazine editor, avid Instagrammer

I'm a New Yorker, the Managing Editor of Popular Science and American Photo magazines, a baker, and an avid mobile photographer and Instagrammer. I live in Hell's Kitchen with my dog, I also spend a lot of time on Fire Island where I own a house with friends. I got a Journalism degree from George Washington University; I write the "Parting Shot" page for American Photo bimonthly.

I co-created the popular IG tag #strideby, nearly 60,000 images of people walking past compelling backdrops worldwide have been tagged to date. One of my own strideby images was selected to be shown at the Columbus Museum of Art for Mobile Photography Now, the first-ever mobile photography exhibit curated by a museum (Feb 6–March 22, 2015).

I was also featured in Issue 003 of Street Dreams magazine, an excellent independent pub created and curated through IG.

I shoot primarily with my iPhone 5S, I occasionally will borrow a DSLR from work if the occasion requires more detail.

Pies are my favorite thing to bake, I baked 20 pies in 2012 to get past my anxiety around making crust properly. Strawberry rhubarb for the win!
