Jo Ivester

Author of award-winning memoir, "The Outskirts of Hope." Speaker and Educator. Racial and LGBTQ civil rights advocate.

At the height of the civil rights movement, Jo Ivester's father moved their family to an all-black town in Mississippi, where he managed a clinic, her mother taught English at the local high school, and she was the only white student at her junior high. In her memoir, "The Outskirts of Hope" (She Writes Press, April 2015), Ivester tells a deeply personal story of her family's experience in the segregated American South. In recent years, Jo has become an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ rights. She and her transgender son are now working together to write a book about his experiences, and they actively seek out speaking opportunities. The more they share their family's story, the more familiar people will become with the issues facing our transgender communities. Their hope is that familiarity will lead to greater acceptance.
