Widely known as the "Dear Abby" of nonprofit leadership, Joan writes a blog for nonprofit leaders read worldwide at www.joangarry.com and hosts the #1 nonprofit podcast : Nonprofits Are Messy. Joan is principal and lead "fixer" at Joan Garry Consulting, working with nonprofit boards and staff as a strategic advisor, crisis manager, change agent and strategic planner. Joan also teaches at the University of Pennsylvania with a focus on nonprofit communications and leadership. Her book, Joan Garry's Guide to Nonprofit Leadership is due out in March 2017. In addition, Joan is a consulting producer and on air talent for NBC's series "Give" in which she offers guidance to celebrities as they decide how to donate money to two worthy causes each week. It airs Saturdays on NBC. Joan is also recognized as one of the most vocal, passionate and effective civil rights leaders in America with nearly a decade of service as the Executive Director of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). During her tenure there, Joan engaged in high profile campaigns to change hearts and minds. These included the successful effort to lobby the New York Times to include gay and lesbian couples on its wedding pages.
