John Dwyer was over 50 when he joined the Peace Corp. His service in Guatemala led to work as a United Nations Volunteer in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the Bosnian War. He has since worked or volunteered in 12 other countries. A particular highlight of his international work was managing camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in 2002 in Herat, Afghanistan. Development work in Kandahar, Afghanistan also stands out. He has travelled to 53 countries and continues to both travel and volunteer internationally. John has the websites Over50andOverseas and ContrarianTraveler and has written for Transitions Abroad, The Orange County Register and the International Travel News among other publications.
