John Turturro

Brooklyn-born actor and director

John Turturro studied at SUNY New Paltz, the Yale School of Drama, and in New York with Robert X. Modica. For his theatrical debut he created the title role of John Patrick Shanley's “Danny and the Deep Blue Sea,” for which he won an OBIE Award and a Theater World Award. Since then, he has performed on stage in "Waiting for Godot," in the title role of Brecht's "The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui," Reinaldo Povod's “La Puta Vida” at the Public, Ionesco's “The Bald Soprano,” and in Eduardo De Filippo’s "Souls of Naples," for which he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award. He appeared at BAM in the role of Hamm in Beckett's “Endgame,” and the title role of Ibsen's “The Master Builder.” At CSC, he appeared as Lopakhin in the highly acclaimed production of "The Cherry Orchard." On Broadway he appeared in Yasmina Reza's "Life x3," and directed an evening of one-acts "Relatively Speaking," by Ethan Coen, Elaine May, and Woody Allen.

Turturro was nominated for a SAG Award® for his portrayal of Howard Cosell in “Monday Night Mayhem,” and again nominated for “The Bronx is Burning,” as notorious Yankee skipper Billy Martin. He won an Emmy Award for his guest appearance on “Monk.”

Turturro has performed in many films, including Spike Lee's “Do the Right Thing,” and “Jungle Fever”; Martin Scorcese’s “The Color of Money;” Tony Bill’s “Five Corners;” Robert Redford’s “Quiz Show”; Peter Weir’s “Fearless;” Tom DiCillo’s “Box of Moonlight;” Alison Anders’ “Grace of My Heart;” Francesco Rosi’s “La Tregua”; Barry Levinson's “What Just Happened”; Robert De Niro's “The Good Shepard,” Sally Potter's “The Man Who Cried,” “The Luzhin Defense,” “Sugartime,” “Unstrung Heroes,” “Rounders,” and Joel and Ethan Coen’s “Miller’s Crossing,” “The Big Lebowski” and “O Brother Where Art Thou.” For his lead role in the Coen Brothers’ “Barton Fink,” Turturro won the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival, and the David Donatello Award.

Turturro has also appeared in the Adam Sandler comedies "Mr. Deeds" and “You Don’t Mess with Zohan,” and in three of Michael Bay's popular “Transformers” films.

He received Cannes' Camera D'Or Award for his directorial debut, "Mac". Other films as director/ writer include “Illuminata,” “Romance & Cigarettes,” “Passione: a Musical Adventure," "Fading Gigolo,” and a segment in the upcoming anthology film, “Rio, I Love You.”

Other upcoming projects include Ridley Scott's “Exodus,” Nanni Moretti's “Mia Madre,” and Marco Pontecorvo's, “Cloudy With a Chance of Rain,” and the HBO miniseries, “Crime.”
