Jonny McGovern

Gay pop singer, comedian, and TV personality (aka Gay Pimp)

Gay pop superstar, TV personality, and nightlife legend, "Gay Pimp" Jonny McGovern blazed onto the New York scene in 2000 with his satirical mix of character comedy and dirty gay hits, and his fire continues to burn bright.

Jonny produced his debut album Dirty Gay Hits in collaboration with IDM producer Secret Agent Gel. Together they crafted a collection of Gay-Pimp-themed songs such as "Soccer Practice," "Lookin’ Cute/Feelin’ Cute," and "Hey Lil' Raver Boi." Jonny then created a dirty, gay-teen-pop-style nightclub act with a bevy of soccer/raver boi dancers, a gay rapper, and fierce drag queens workin' the runway. Jonny headlined all over Manhattan, including Homocorps at the legendary CBGB, Joe's Pub, Splash, and LUXX. He opened for Peaches and Chicks on Speed at The Electro Clash Festival, and he's hosted his own white-hot parties, such as Boys Gone Wild and The Rambles at The Park.

The Gay Pimp became an Internet and international phenomenon. Teaming up with Broadway veteran Richard Jay-Alexander (Les Miserables, Bette Midler’s "Kiss My Brass" tour) and director Peter Martinez, Jonny created a video for "Soccer Practice," which debuted in the top five of the national video club chart and was downloaded over 2.2 million times from GayPimp.com and well as getting play on MTV Europe and MTV Asia. Jonny also toured nightclubs around the country as Gay Pimp and headlined the legendary Caroline’s On Broadway in his own stand-up comedy/music/variety show, You Go, Gay.

Jonny broke into TV with several high-profile gigs. Comedy Central’s Out on the Edge, hosted by Alan Cumming, brought Jonny’s Gay Pimp revue to a national TV audience. For an entire season, Ricki Lake highlighted his comedy and solidified his status as a ghetto superstar. He then began a long string of appearances on VH1, first being profiled on Totally Gayer and then starring on My Coolest Years. Jonny also released another smash music video, "Lookin’ Cute/Feelin’ Cute" and toured Japan. In January 2006 Jonny conquered another format with his weekly podcast Gay Pimpin’ with Jonny McGovern, the most popular gay/weekly/comedy show on iTunes.

Along with business partner and podcast co-host Martín Beauchamp, Jonny has started a new record label, Gay/Nerd Music, on which he has released three albums: This Is NYC Bitch: The East Village Mixtape, Gays Gone Wild, and, most recently, Keep It Faggity: The Gay Pimp Remix Project. He is also a cast member of the new sketch comedy show The Big Gay Sketch Show, produced by Rosie O’Donnell for the LOGO television network.

This Is NYC Bitch: The East Village Mixtape is a reflection on where gay culture has been and where it is going. It maintains the spirit of optimism that remains strong in the gay community today: the unwavering conviction that whatever happens, the gay community will not only survive but thrive... and celebrate every step of the way!
