Joseph Bishop

Senior Policy Advisor, Learning Policy Institute

Dr. Bishop is a senior policy advisor with the Learning Policy Institute, a national education think tank working to establish optimal conditions for student learning through better alignment of research, practice and policy, from the early years through college. He has held a number of national and state education leadership positions including Director of Policy with the National Opportunity to Learn (OTL) Campaign, an initiative of the Schott Foundation for Public Education; Executive Director of the political arm of the OTL Campaign, Opportunity Action; founding co-chair Coalition for Teaching Quality, a 100 plus national membership group; Director of Strategic Initiatives with the Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21); Director of Education for the National Association of Latino Elected & Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund and was formerly a governor-appointed member of the California Postsecondary Education Commission (CPEC). He serves on the Board of Directors for the Center for Teaching Quality and is a member of the Advisory Council for the Children’s Creativity Museum of San Francisco.

Bishop has a bachelor’s degree in Communication and Media Studies from California State University, Chico and a M.A. and Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, Policy and Organizations from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
