Juliana Martínez is Assistant Professor at the Department of World Languages and Cultures at American University, Washington, DC. She focuses on the intersection of violence and body politics in the Latin-American and the US Latino context. Professor Martínez regularly teaches courses on Latin American literature, film and history; gender and sexuality; Latin American feminisms; narratives of violence (particularly in Colombia and Mexico); and women writers in Latin America. Within the AU community, Professor Martínez is also part of the advisory board of the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies program, and a member of the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies (CLALS). Dr. Martínez combines her academic work with advocacy and consulting work. She is project manager of the Sentiido (sentiido.com)—an initiative that focuses on providing information, education, and analysis on LGBT and gender issues in Colombia; and does diversity consulting work for a variety of or private, public and non-profit organizations.
