Klara Glowczewska

Klara Glowczewska was appointed Editor in Chief of Condé Nast Traveler in January 2005, having served as the magazine’s Executive Editor since December 1992. She originally joined Condé Nast Traveler as part of the magazine’s launch team in 1987 as Senior Editor. She became Literary Editor in December 1988, and Features Editor in August 1989.

In her role as Executive Editor, Glowczewska has commissioned and worked with, among other writers, Robert Hughes, Paul Theroux, John Gregory Dunne, Robert Stone, Russell Banks, Luc Sante, Amy Wilentz, Pico Iyer, Michael Kinsley, Guy Martin, Edna O’Brien, Peter Carey, Andre Aciman, Philip Gourevitch, Stephen King, and E. L. Doctorow.

Several of the articles Glowczewska edited were nominated for National Magazine Awards, including two features nominated in Essays & Criticism—the first time a travel magazine had ever been nominated in that category. Condé Nast Traveler has been nominated for 22 National Magazine Awards, six of which were in the General Excellence category. The magazine has won six awards in numerous categories, including General Excellence, Special Interest, Design and Photography. Condé Nast Traveler is the only travel publication to win a National Magazine Award. Condé Nast Traveler was nominated for two National Magazine Awards for 2005, after Glowczewska’s first year as Editor in Chief.

Before joining Condé Nast Publications, Glowczewska held a number of highly regarded editorial positions in book publishing and journalism, including Random House and the New York Review of Books. She has also edited for Condé Nast Publications’ Vanity Fair and The New Yorker.

Born in Warsaw, Poland, and raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, Cairo, Egypt, and New Canaan, Connecticut, Glowczewka speaks three languages, including French and Polish. She has translated, from the Polish to English, two books by the internationally acclaimed writer Ryszard Kapuscinski, about the former Soviet Union (Imperium) and Africa (The Shadow of the Sun)—and is presently translating a third, about the relevance of Herodotus and his travels to our times.

Klara Glowczewska holds a B.A. degree in English, Magna Cum Laude, from Yale College. She lives in New York City with her husband and two children.
