Prof. Upson-Saia teaches courses in the history and literature of early Christianity. She offers introductory level courses, such as the The History of Early Christianity, as well as specialized topics courses on magic, miracle and medicine; sexuality; apocryphal literature; and death. She also leads the Turkey: Then & Now program, which pairs a semester long course with a short-term field study in Turkey (ancient Asia Minor).

Her research interests include early Christian dress and performativity; late ancient representations of disability and deformity; and interpretations of and treatments for anger in the ancient world.
