Candidate for Michigan State Representative, District 4

Detroiter Marcelus Brice is a shining example of the entrepreneurial spirit and the rising engaged leadership that is apparent with many young professionals in the city today. What sets him apart is a broad range of experience in leading community organizations and spearheading issues of great concern to citizens.

Brice is an entrepreneur, a community organizer, an advocate for residents’ quality of life, a former legislative staffer, and a convener of residents’ concerns through community-based initiatives.

A lifelong Detroit resident and a graduate of Martin Luther King Jr. High School, Brice is committed to moving Detroit and Hamtramck forward by focusing on citizens’ primary needs. In his legislative work, he was most recently community relations director for Detroit City Council President Pro Tem Gary Brown. Brice is currently a business partner in the Mark England Collection.

Brice will focus on YOU -- the citizen and business owner -– as your representative in the fourth district of the Michigan House of Representatives.

The following is Brice’s impact to date:

• Led Detroit’s largest resident association as president of the Morning Side Community Association (2007-2009). Brice formed stronger relations with the Detroit Police Department and community groups, and strived to address youth violence and curfew issues. He led Morning Side’s first-ever community and police walk with participation from a broad range of residents. Morning Side represents 20,000 households.

• Organized a DTE forum with Greater New Mt. Moriah Baptist Church to help low income families keep their lights and gas in service. As a result of this rally, 500 families kept service on or it was restored.

• Chaired the Michigan Midtown Democratic Party (2009-2011) where Brice fought for legislation to lower utility bills, foreclosure relief for residents, and rid the state of the driver responsibility fees.

• Formed the Somerset Action Committee in 2006 to fight against proposal two in order to keep Affirmative Action in place in Michigan.

• Assisted in workforce training and placement at the Payne Pulliam School of Trade (2007-2010) for low income and out-of-work Detroit residents.

• Graduated from the Michigan Political Leaders program in 2009.

• Served as a board member of the Michigan Young Dems (2009-2011).

• Received the Benjamin L. Hooks Entrepreneur Award in 2008.

• Campaigned for state representative in old district four in 2010 on a platform of addressing epic unemployment, driver responsibility fees and senior services.
