Margaret Martin, Harmony Project Founder, earned a Masters Degree in Public Health from UCLA in both Behavioral Science / Health Education and in Population and Family Health -- and a Doctorate in Public Health from UCLA in Community Health Science. A specialist in community building and maternal, child and family health, she has worked extensively as a community organizer in low-income neighborhoods. She lectures and consults on community building through arts education. With the support of researchers at UCLA and the RAND Corporation, she is conducting a multi-year experimental study of the impact of community-based music education on disadvantaged public school children in Los Angeles.
A published author and illustrator (Pregnancy and Childbirth: The Basic Illustrated Guide, Perseus Books, Cambridge, MA), and a produced playwright, composer and lyricist (Gone with the Wind, New London Theatre, London -- directed by Trevor Nunn), she is the mother of three grown children, who are all working artists. She is a member of the Harmony Project’s Executive Committee, and lives in Los Angeles, California.
