Mark A. Barondess

A trial lawyer for 29 years, Barondess has earned a reputation as one of the most aggressive civil advocates in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. He has tried complex cases in state and federal courts throughout the country with a concentration in complex and high-profile domestic relations litigation. Mr. Barondess has a diverse practice, also concentrating in the fields of commercial litigation, partnership and contractual rights litigation, fiduciary rights litigation, medical and legal malpractice litigation, real estate and construction litigation, and local government litigation.

The praise of the work of Mr. Barondess is well-recognized. Larry King has called him “one of our nation’s top attorneys,” and Montel Williams echoed those words, terming him “one of the top lawyers in the country.” An article in The Washington Post gave Barondess the unprecedented accolade of "superlawyer." Barondess holds the preeminent "AV" rating from Martindale Hubbell based upon a confidential evaluation by his peers and members of the judiciary.

Barondess formerly represented the interests of CNN broadcasting giant Larry King and his affiliated companies as his general counsel prior to his retirement from CNN. Other high-profile clients have included a former Presidential candidate, an Academy award winning actress, a Grammy award winner, an Emmy award winner and various sports legends and several Olympic Gold Medalists. Barondess has represented members of Congress and the Federal Executive Branch of Government, at the Cabinet level.

Barondess serves as a Judge Pro Tempore and has served as Neutral Case Evaluator for the Circuit Court of Fairfax County, Virginia, and is a Commissioner in Chancery for that Court. He also has served as a member of the Fifth District Disciplinary Committee of the Virginia State Bar.

With years of experience handling prominent domestic law cases, Mr. Barondess authored the popular book, What were you Thinking??, in which he provides insights into the cycle of relations, marriage and divorce. In addition to favorable reviews from Publisher’s Weekly and others, Katie Couric praised the book as a “really fun book to read,” and Donald J. Trump noted that it contained “good solid advice based on experience.”

Barondess is also Vice-Charman of The We are Family Foundation, a not for profit organization founded by his friend, music legend and multiple Grammy winner Nile Rodgers, which is dedicated to the vision of a global family by creating and supporting programs that inspire and educate the next generation about respect, understanding and cultural diversity.

Barondess received his education at Virginia Tech, (B.A. 1981) and George Mason University School of Law, (J.D. 1985). He is admitted to bar the Bar in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the District of Columbia, and the states of Maryland and California.
