Mary Haviland

Executive Director at the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault

Mary Haviland is the Executive Director at the New York City Alliance Against Sexual Assault whose mission is to prevent sexual violence and reduce the harm it causes through education, research and advocacy. As a lawyer and community activist, she has more than 35 years’ experience in violence against women, research, advocacy and philanthropy. Before coming to the Alliance, she served as a Commissioner of the New York State Crime Victims Board, Deputy Director for Victim Advocacy, oversaw the Grants and Public Policy Program at the NYC Affiliate of Susan G. Komen, and As Co-Executive Director of CONNECT. She has chaired several domestic violence task forces She is author of several publications on domestic violence in such journals as Violence Against Women and Journal of Family Violence. She co-authored a study of the effects mandatory arrest entitled, The Family Protection and Domestic Violence Intervention Act of 1995: Examining the Effect of Mandatory arrest in New York City in 2001. She has served on several Boards of Directors including New York Asian Women’s Center and Voices of Women. Haviland received her law degree from NYU Law School as a Root, Tilden, Snow Scholar in 1994 and is admitted to practice law in New York State.
