Mary J. Loftus

Mary J. Loftus is associate editor of Emory Magazine, the University’s alumni publication, where she has reported on the return of the lost Pharaoh, Ramesses I, from Emory to Egypt; the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from a refugee camp near Bethlehem in the West Bank; the acquisition of Salman Rushdie’s digital archive and old Macs; and uber-loyal alumni who donate their bodies to their alma mater’s medical school.

Previously, she was a co-director of the New York Times Feature Production Center, a reporter, bureau chief, and weekly columnist with the NYT newspaper group, and a freelancer for Psychology Today, Humanities: the magazine of the NEH, USA Today, Vent, and the NYT news service. While serving as a Knight Journalism fellow at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, she accompanied the CDC’s antibioterrorism team to the Republican National Convention and to investigate an outbreak of syphilis in Indianapolis.

She has won several New York Times chairman’s awards, the National Hospice Organization’s media award of excellence, and three Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) awards for feature writing. A graduate of the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and master’s and specialist degrees in counseling, she lives in suburban Atlanta.
