Dr. Mary Anne Franks is a Professor of Law at the University of Miami School of Law, where she teaches courses on First Amendment law, criminal law, family law, and law and technology. Professor Franks holds a J.D. from Harvard Law School and doctorate and master’s degrees from Oxford University, where she studied on a Rhodes Scholarship. Her areas of research include free speech, online abuse, discrimination, and gun violence. She is the Legislative & Tech Policy Director and Vice-President of the Cyber Civil Rights Initiative (CCRI), a non-profit organization dedicated to challenging online abuse and discrimination. She has advised both state and federal legislators in drafting laws relating to sexual privacy, extortion, harassment, and threats. Professor Franks has also worked extensively with tech industry leaders, including Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Microsoft, on privacy and harassment issues.
