Masoud Shafaee

Attorney, Middle East analyst

Masoud Shafaee is a Maryland-barred attorney and freelance Middle East analyst. He earned his Master’s degree in international affairs from American University’s School of International Service, where he wrote his thesis on the role of networks in Iranian social movements (specifically in 1979, 1999, and 2009), and received his Juris Doctor from American University’s Washington College of Law, where his substantial research paper examined the legal framework behind recent United Nations Security Council sanctions imposed on Iran’s nuclear program. He received his Bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California--Davis, and is fluent in Persian/Farsi.

In addition to being published in the Huffington Post, he has written for the Washington Prism, World Politics Review, and the Guardian, and has been repeatedly featured on the popular foreign policy blog, EA WorldView. He also maintains The Newest Deal, a site which provides coverage and analysis of Iranian affairs. Mr. Shafaee was born in Tehran, hails from the San Francisco Bay area, and currently resides in Washington, D.C., where he practices law. He can be reached at masoud@thenewestdeal.org.
