Meredith Carlson Daly is a freelance writer whose family was exiled from her native South Africa when she was a young girl because of the anti-Apartheid work of her father, the late Joel Carlson. He was one of the few white lawyers representing black clients, including Nelson and Winnie Mandela. She returned to South Africa in 1994 with her father to cover the historic elections and write her personal story. She lives in Silver Spring, Md.
