Michael Meredith is a filmmaker currently directing the documentary Return to Timbuktu, about musicians in Mali spreading the message of peace and reconciliation. In 2012, a military coup, rebel and radical uprisings created chaos in Northern Mali. Strict sharia law was imposed in Timbuktu, and made a target out of musicians. For the first time in history, the “birthplace of modern music” had been silenced.
