Orlando Márquez Hidalgo

Director of the Catholic magazine Palabra Nueva in Havana

Orlando Márquez Hidalgo studied at the School of Architecture of Havana. Upon his graduation in June 1990, he was granted a scholarship by the Episcopal Council for Latin America (CELAM) and got a Diploma in Social Communication from CELAM-UPAEP, in Puebla, Mexico, in December 1990. He has been Director of the Department of Social Media of the Archdiocese of Havana since January 1991.

In April 1992, he founded the Catholic monthly magazine Palabra Nueva (New Word). Since then, he has been Director of Palabra Nueva, which in 1998 received the Gold Medal from UCIP (International Catholic Union for the Press). In 2004, he received a Journalistic Excellence Award from UCIP.

He was also Director of the Press Office of the Cuban Conference of Catholic Bishops (COCC) for the visit of both Pope John Paul II (1998) and Pope Benedict XVI (2012) to Cuba.

He holds a Diploma of Conflict Resolution from the University of Uppssala, Sweden (2003). In 2006 he got another Diploma of Conflict Resolution from the University of York, United Kingdom, where was invited to attend a Chevening Fellowship program sponsored by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).
He is married to Nory Menéndez since 1984, and is father of Orlando (25) and Daniel (24).
