Joshua Pearce

Director, Michigan Tech Open Sustainability Technology Lab

Dr. Joshua M. Pearce is an associate professor cross-appointed in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. He runs the Michigan Tech Open Sustainability Technology Lab, whose research concentrates on the use of open-source-appropriate technology to find collaborative solutions to problems in sustainability and poverty reduction. The Lab's work is all open source and freely available on Appropedia.org. His research spans areas of open-source 3-D printing with RepRap technology for sustainable development and solar photovoltaic electronic device physics and materials engineering of solar photovoltaic cells and systems. His work also covers applied sustainability and policy. Prof. Pearce is the author of the Open Source Lab: How to Build Your Own Hardware and Reduce Research Costs, a guide to making custom low-cost scientific equipment using 3-D printers and open-source electronics.
