Senior Editor, The Washington Monthly

Phillip Longman is the Senior Editor at the Washington Monthly, a research fellow at the New America Foundation, and a lecturer at Johns Hopkins University, where he teaches health care policy.

His work has appeared in such publications as The Atlantic Monthly, Der Spiegel, The Financial Times, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Harvard Business Review, The National Review, World Politics Journal, The New Statesman, The New York Times Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and Washington Post.

He is also the author of many books, including Best Care Anywhere: Why VA Health Care would be Better for Everyone. Recently updated with a 3rd Edition, the book chronicles the quality transformation of the Veterans Health Administration and applies its lessons for reforming the U.S. health care system as a whole.

He has also written frequently on the issue of global aging and its relationship to falling fertility rates around the world, which he first explored in 2004 book, The Empty Cradle. He has spoken widely on the subject, including in advisory roles with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Naval War College, and the government of the Russian Federation.
