Patrick Murphy is an MSNBC contributor and Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress. In 2006, Murphy became the first Iraq war veteran elected to Congress. Prior to that, he served as a military and federal prosecutor in the U.S. Army. Already on active duty, Murphy volunteered for combat after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. He deployed to Bosnia and later to Iraq with the 82nd Airborne Division. He earned a Bronze Star for service. In Congress, Murphy helped lead the effort to repeal Don't Ask, Don't Tell and fought to protect American consumers from financial crime.
