Risa Shoup

Risa Shoup is completing her MA in English at Brooklyn College with a concentration on critical theory and cultural studies. Until 2009, she served as the Programming Director of chashama, an NYC-based not-for-profit which transforms temporarily vacant real estate into artist workspace. Risa is currently the Residency Manager of Probable Fireworks, a new collaborative artists' residency at BRIC Arts|Media|Bklyn in Downtown Brooklyn. She is also curating an NYC exhibition of emerging Detroit-based visual artists and writing a book about the post-industrial, grassroots, contemporary arts scene in Detroit. Her interest in Detroit was sparked when she spoke about non-traditional art spaces at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit in 2008. She has since spoken about the evolution of DIY artspaces in Detroit at Fred Torres Collaborations in NYC and Harvard University.
In November, she will be curating the exhibition, What is the Where?, at the Invisible Dog gallery in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn for Recession Arts.
Currently, she is a development consultant for The Wassaic Project, an artists' residency in Wassaic, NY.
