Sarah J. Jackson

Sarah is an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. She holds a M.A. from the University of Michigan and a PhD from the University of Minnesota. Her research and teaching focus on how media discourses of race, class, and gender reinforce and/or challenge concepts of national belonging. Sarah’s published work, which has appeared in The Harvard International Journal of Press Politics and Feminist Media Studies, has examined news representations of racial identity in political campaigns, news coverage of social protest, and the intersections of race and gender in news coverage of sexual violence. Once upon a time Sarah momentarily pursued a career as a music journalist and rap battle host. Outside her academic life, Sarah regularly volunteers with youth in educational equity programs, does a lot of yoga, walks the dog, and fantasizes about being an artist. Sarah is currently working on a book that examines how social and political protest by African American celebrities is framed by journalists.
