Sarah Jameel

Sarah is currently a Dental Student and Quercus Active Citizenship Scholar at University College Cork in Ireland, and recently graduated from McGill University in Canada in Biomedical Sciences and International Relations. In Summer 2014, she worked as an Intern in mHealth to the Director for the Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. She started her activism at the age of 11 in the aftermath of the Asian Tsunami where she fundraised for medicine and medical equipment for affected Hospitals in the East of Sri Lanka. She continued her passion for affordable and reliable healthcare and by organizing free paediatric health camps underprivileged children in urban Sri Lanka. At 16, she founded KICK THE BUTT – the world’s first fashion and social media based anti-teen smoking campaign, which utilized fashion and social media to change the mindset of teen smoking among the urban population of Sri Lanka. She introduced her project to world leaders and businessmen at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2010 and to Former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown at No. 10 Downing Street. Her commitment to community service and youth activism has won her the titles of Global Teen Leader by We Are Family Foundation, Global Changemaker of British Council, and TEDMED Front Line Scholar by TEDMED. She has been a speaker at numerous events including the Closing Plenary of the World Economic Forum, International Women’s Day Celebrations by the United Nations Office in Sri Lanka, Just Peace Summit in New York City, ‘We Are The World’ Conference in Montreal, the UN World Conference on Youth 2014 in Sri Lanka and the European Youth Parliament 2016 in Ireland. She is Hugh Brock Entrance Scholar at McGill and graduated from the Deans Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research List in 2014. She is a writer/blogger at the Huffington Post and also writes via Medium on issues that she deems requires attention on a global scale. Her dream is to create reliable and affordable dental care to areas of conflict and regions of the world that need it the most through the formation of a Doctors Beyond Borders (MSF) for Dentists. Sarah is a youth activist, writer and dot-connecter. She is a trilingual, has a World Prize in Science Fiction Writing, an Associate of Trinity College London in Speech and Drama, a Graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA), and a former National Level debater, chess player and diver in Sri Lanka. She's a full-time nerd, part-time joker, and during her breaks she enjoys windsurfing and snorkeling with sharks
