School on Wheels of Massachusetts

Cheryl Opper is the founder and Executive Director of School on Wheels of Masachusetts.

School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA) was founded in 2004 by teacher and child advocate Cheryl Opper to provide one-on-one academic tutoring and critical educational support to children experiencing homelessness. As the number of families and children without permanent homes in Massachusetts has continued to climb, SOWMA has grown dramatically, too. Over the past 9 years, the organization has served more than 1,520 students, trained 1,332 volunteer tutors, established 21 tutoring sites, distributed nearly 4,800 backpacks stuffed with age-appropriate school supplies, and supported 33 students enrolled in 10 New England colleges with its innovative High School Plus program.
