Scott Burgess

Scott Burgess has always lived a nomad’s life.

First as the son of Baptist preacher, then as paratrooper in the U.S. Army and finally as journalist.

An award-winning journalist at The Detroit News, Scott has been the auto critic there for three years where he writes two reviews a week and covers automotive issues in Detroit. His reviews run every Thursday and Saturday. He is also published in Cars.com and his stories printed in numerous Media News Group papers. MNG is the second largest owner of newspapers in the country.

Before moving to Detroit, he worked as the Middle East Bureau Chief for Stars & Stripes, covering the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. (He also covered those peacekeeping efforts in Bosnia and Kosovo.) While at Stripes, he oversaw the first project by any news organization to survey more than 2,000 troops in Iraq. The survey helped break the series of stories about the inequities between regular military troops and reserve soldiers fighting on the same fronts. It also garnered international recognition and a slew of awards for the paper, including being named a finalist for the Scipps Howard Distinguished Service to the First Amendment.

He has also paid his journalistic dues in locations such as Culver City, Calif., Elmira, N.Y. and Boca Raton, Fla.

A graduate of UCLA, Scott lives outside Detroit with his wife, Vikki, and their German Shepherd, Bogart.
