Susan J. Noonan MD, MPH

Dr. Susan Noonan is a physician and the author of "When Someone You Know Has Depression: Words to Say and Things to Do"

Dr. Susan J. Noonan a part time certified peer specialist and consultant at McLean Hospital, the largest psychiatric affiliate of Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts General Hospital. She focuses on working with patients, advising staff and faculty about depression and recovery. After receiving her certification from the American Board of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Noonan began treating patients with a variety of medical conditions at different stages of their illness, including many years counseling, treating and advocating for individuals with mental illness. Dr. Noonan is the author of the new book, "When Someone You Know Has Depression: Words to Say and Things to Do" (Johns Hopkins University Press, June 2016), where she draws on personal experience and evidence-based medical information to create a concise and practical guide to caring for someone who has depression or bipolar disorder. A companion book to her first book, "Managing Your Depression: What You Can Do to Feel Better" (Johns Hopkins University Press, May 2013), both jointly provide valuable insight and practical advice for those experiencing depression and their caregivers. In "When Someone You Know Has Depression" Dr. Noonan addresses the most effective communications strategies for caregivers, what to do when someone refuses treatment, as well as information on the importance of caring for yourself when assisting someone with an emotional disorder. Dr. Noonan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Mount Holyoke College, where she was the recipient of the Abbey Howe Turner Award for excellence in biology. She then earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from the Tufts University School of Medicine and a master’s degree in public health from the Harvard University School of Public Health, with a concentration in quality of care. For the past eight years, Dr. Noonan has been a volunteer he at the Maxwell V. Blum Cancer Resource Center of The Massachusetts General Hospital, counseling patients and helping them find the information they need. In 2006 she was presented with an esteemed Massachusetts General Hospital Volunteer Service Award in recognition for her exemplary service. She lives outside of Boston, Mass.
